Live to Fight Another Day

eusebiopanthIt’s a slow Portuguese football news day, so Eusebio’s successful surgery will allow me to enlighten those who have no idea about the Pantera Negra’s (black panther, hence the well Paint-shopped photo to the left) exploits which culminated in Portugal’s best finish (3rd place) at the 1966 World Cup.

The 65 year old Eusebio had surgery this past Monday to remove a blockage in his cartoid artery after complaining of chest pains. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Eusebio played in his heyday for Benfica and won an astonishing ten league championships with the club. During his run at Benfica, which lasted 15 years, he also netted 317 goals in 301 games. Yes, math majors, this means that he was scoring goals at a rate of slightly more than one per game. I’m not going to try to contain all of his success in a simple blog post, yet I implore you to watch the videos below and wonder how the hell people watched soccer back in the day. Oh yeah, and for some text-based info, check his Wiki as a start.
