The Eagles Have Landed

By: Greg | April 4th, 2007

UEFA CupBenfica have arrived in Barcelona ahead of their UEFA Cup tie with Espanyol tomorrow. It has come to that point in the 06/07 season, where, regardless of how many competitions or cups you’re involved in, injuries are becoming a serious factor. Most champions limp across the finish line, silverware in one hand and a few good luck charms in the other. Depth will be the true determining factor in most games going forward, and where injury may not be a paramount concern, fatigue surely will be. On that note, both teams are currently facing injury worries.

Benfica are coming off an emotionally and physically draining derby with Porto. Despite the underdog status of Espanyol, expect them to create chances especially as the game wears on. I can see this game resulting in a push with Benfica wanting to save something for the tank on the return leg home at the Estadio da Luz. However, given how banged up each team is, look for some potentially wide open play and hopefully a windfall of chances on both ends.

If pressed, I’m going to have to back up what I previously said and say I see this ending in a draw, 1-1 but 2-2 is not out of the question.

And, of course, GO CHELSEAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! Come on you Blues!!
