Where the CHiPs Fell…
By: Greg | May 22nd, 2007
There were nine distinctions handed out on Sunday: One champion, two Champions League group stage spots, one Champions League qualifier spot, three UEFA Cup spots, and two tickets down to the Liga da Honra.
Here’s who got what:
Porto are champions, they finished first with 69 points which also earns them an automatic bid into the Champions League group stage.
Sporting finished second by one point on 68 and will earn the second Champions League group spot.
Benfica finished second on 67 points and will be in the Champions League qualifiers.
Braga finished on 50, Belenenses finished on 49, and Paços de Ferreira closed the season on 42 points. These three teams comprise Portugal’s entrants into the UEFA Cup.
The winners (losers) of the relegation race are Beira Mar who finished second to last on 23 points and Aves who finished last on 22. They will be supplanted by Liga da Honra winners Leixões and second place finishers Vitória de Guimarães.
An awesome close to the season saw an anti-climactic final day for the top and V.Setubal leap frogging two teams to save themselves from relegation at the bottom. With both V.Guimares and V.Setubal in the league next year, that will renew the “Hey, we’re the true Vitória derby” which always produces intense matches. Again, congratulations to Porto, and if Sporting don’t go through a fire sale, I see them coming into next year as the chic pick to win the league. It’ll certainly be fun to watch all of those youngsters play the vaunted European competition in the Champions League.
I’m going on ANOTHER trip to San Diego (this time to get married) and will not be back until next Thursday for blogging purposes. I don’t have anyone in the bullpen to write for me while I’m gone, but make sure to catch the Taça de Portugal final on the 27th of May between Belenenses and Sporting. Until then, I’m off to unceremoniously hand in my customer appreciation card at the local strip joint. Or wait, maybe I should hang on to it… JUST in case.

I don’t even care about the contents, the pic makes this my favorite post of the day.
(And congrats on the wedding! Did you cancel the honeymoon because you had to blog?)
