What Do You Call a Striker Who Doesn’t Score?
By: Greg | July 5th, 2007
Reports are coming out of Europe that Sporting are interested in Argentine bench warmer Maxi Lopez. Maxi scored on his debut as a sub with Barcelona and hasn’t been able to recapture that magic since. As of the end of the 2006/07 campaign, Maxi has barely even played for Barca and spent the last year on loan with Mallorca where he only started about half the games and netted a paltry couple of goals. So this subpar performance thus far in the Primera yields him a chance at Sporting where they’re looking to contend for the title next year? Why?
I made it a point in the opening to call him an “Argentine bench warmer” because he isn’t a “Barcelona striker.” He doesn’t really ever play for the team and when he does, he doesn’t score. So to call him anything other than his nationality and present occupation would be a misnomer. I honestly think is a horrible move for Sporting. He’s young and has a large frame but why not pull any other athletic 6′2″ 23 year old off the street with some hops and put him in the box instead of paying some glorfied grass aerator to do the same?

He scored that beautiful goal for Argentina during the World Cup last year but other than that I have never seen the guy as being especially good.

I recall that goal, it was also known as his “peak.”

I am not agree with this text, is a very good player that can do special goals, we see it in Argentina and so on…
Sporting is the portuguese team that have more chances to be the new champion, because Izmailov and Joao Moutinho are an example of quality from their squad, I also think that will be a good surprise in Champions League.

The one who scored that wondergoal was Maxi Rodriguez of Atletico Madrid, who is about 10 times the player Maxi Lopez is.
I think the latter Maxi’s problem is that he left Argentina far too early. Barca signed him because we had injuries left and right that season and needed cover. I’ll always have a place for him in my heart because of his one excellent performance for us – a goal and an assist to defeat Chelsea.
Not sure why Sporting are interested, but Barca are certainly keen to offload him.
