Week Two and a Monster’s Already On the Cards

By: Greg | August 24th, 2007

monsterIt’s only the second jornada of the season, but this weekend brings us a clash of titans between Sporting and Porto at the Dragão. I feel these two teams will probably be battling it out for first place this year. If you care at all about Portuguese club football you have to open up your Sunday afternoon, grab a few Super Bocks or Sagres and either find a Portuguese bar or someone with SportTV1. This would be a great way to break into Portuguese football for those who haven’t tasted a big match yet. The Dragão is a world-class stadium and both of these teams’ supporters bring everything they’ve got to the park.

The worst that can happen here is that these two teams cancel each other out. Sporting play a more up tempo game full of youthful vigor. Porto are tactically sound and wear teams down in creating scoring chances. Given my mother-in-law’s love for Sporting I can’t say anything but that I think they’ll win. I’m hoping that the game lives up to the hype, but since this is only the second week, this game may feature a lot of “feeling each other out.” On the other hand, they faced off a few weeks ago in the SuperTaça (which Sporting won 1-0 on an Izmailov rocket from 32 yards out) so hopefully they’ll have some ideas about how to open the game up on each other and give us a real show. I want to say I like Sporting to win 2-1, so I’ll say that, even though it’s in Porto’s house. Here’s the rest of the matches along with this week’s version of FixtureFacts 2.0, featuring the name of each club’s manager in parenthesis…
