The Wasteland That is League News
By: Greg | May 30th, 2008
Wow. What an absolute “poo” day for League news coming out of Portugal. As is to be expected, the Euro is dominating the headlines with precious few prominent stories in regards to league activity. Therefore, here’s a quick news piece from each of the “Big Three” clubs:
** Porto ** - For their Champions League defense, the Dragons are planning on citing the instance where AC Milan were allowed to compete in the tournament a few years back in spite of the Calciopoli scandal that they were involved in. Also, midfielder Paulo Assunção has invoked Article 17, known as the “Webster Law” in order to buy out the remainder of his contract. It is believed he is wanted by Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
** Benfica ** - The Encarnados have signed twenty four year old French midfielder Hassan Yebda away from French side Le Mans. Here’s video of his fancy footwork and an even fancier own goal. Yay!
** Sporting ** - After what has been thus far a successful knee surgery, the Lions’ Brazilian forward Liedson has returned to his home country for rest and rehabilitation. Sporting brass will undoubtedly be monitoring his situation closely, as he led the team in scoring this past year with eleven goals.
Portugal are facing off against Georgia tomorrow in their final match before heading to SwissAustria for the Euros. All I have to say is Força Portugal. Thank you.

Hélder Postiga signed with Sporting for 3 years.
Rumour has it that they´re on track to getting Caneira back. I think Gladstone is going away, so this would give a different consistency to the back line. But we still need a top notch centre back. http://www.abola.pt/nnh/index.asp?op=ver&news=142056&d=1&tema=4Posted from
