Quique Sánchez Flores Has A Job Until October

By: Greg | May 23rd, 2008

Which is the month in which Benfica will probably start their coaching carousel of hiring former bosses who took the team virtually nowhere.

I sincerely hope that Rui Costa takes his job and his pride seriously and gets this team headed in the right direction.  This first hire seems to be doing just that.

Quique Flores is not another managerial retread and has absolutely no history with any of the three major clubs in Portugal.  He’s had a short managerial career, composed of a stint with Spanish Liga side Getafe from 2003-05 and then qualified for the Champions League with Valencia and stayed from 2005-07 when he was ousted due to a slow    start in the most recent season.

I’m not a Benfica supporter, but I love this hiring for the Encarnados.  Quique’s a young (forty-three) intelligent boss with Champions League pedigree and experience at two Spanish top flight clubs.  He’s just what Benfica need right now as their coaching disaster last year produced retread after retread and never let them get the proveribal car out of the garage.

Quique will do well in Lisbon and will hopefully thrive off the energy of a young and passionate boss such as Rui Costa.  He’s already asked Ol’ Number Ten for a few defensive players and a midfielder, so the guy’s obviously prepared and ready to challenge Porto for the League next year.  The hiring of Quique is a great move not only from a purely technical standpoint, but also as a way of Benfica saying to the league and its supporters: “Let’s pick our asses up and move forward to get back on track and do this right.”

I wish him all the best.  As long as he isn’t facing Sporting.  Then, I hope he has explosive diarrhea.  Enjoy your weekend.

Mourinho to Inter for 3 years + 9 millionE. Deco and Lampard will follow him. http://www.abola.pt/nnh/index.asp? op=ver&news=141672&d=1&tema=2
Figo is staying one year more, now we’re all waiting to see whether Drogba will follow as well… 8)

I like A Bola and all, but until a major news outlet confirms the Mourinho move, I’m not sold (although it’s been in the works for months now apparently). They’re the only place that’s reporting this and someone else would have picked up on it had it been confirmed by either party. The article you have there quotes no one from both sides.

The Deco and Lampard comments are also pure speculation. Some news outlets should be a little more careful with how they word gossip / speculation and independently confirmed fact. Tribal football, AS in Spain, and Goal.com are great for picking up on or creating what seem to be entirely contradictory and fabricated junk.

    Fair enough. I also don´t work for A BOLA, so it´s OK… ;-) Anyway, it´s not like it doesn´t make sense…

The waiting till the Champs Final happened when everybody already sort of knew he was heading Italy, Rijkaard and Barça falling out, also Grant´s sacking, etc…, all these things count when you think about signing certain players. I can imagine that now the hypothesis of bringing Lampard, or Deco, or Drogba, has a much different perspective than the one it had 2-3 weeks ago. 8)

I mean, the timing is essential here. We can´t say for sure that Lampard and Deco will follow Mourinho everywhere he´s going. Only A BOLA got the scoop. But it´s public Lampard wanted to, so did R Carvalho and so did Drogba… And also that Deco still has a lot of football in his legs and was sort of pushed out by Barça.

No matter who coaches Chelsea next year, he´s gonna have an even worse time than Grant (I feel the way it all happened will hinder Chelsea the most at the end), cos even if all players stay, the atmosphere cannot possibily be the same anymore. It was the end of a cycle with Chelsea. I imagine they´ll either want to follow him, cos he´ll surelly go to a team that can win silverware, or somewhere else were they can win silverware.

Honestly, I hope Chelsea keeps it up, cos it´s nice to have a new team rocking and getting to the “restricted club”. It´s also a fundamentaly different team than Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool. From these 4, we can agree that it was Chelsea and Man Utd the ones who did the most for english football, in the sense of keeping and promoting english players. Chelsea alone puts 3 key players in the England side and he made a top player out of Joe Cole, shaping the talent he already had.

Sooner or later people will realize that 90% of what was said regarding Chelsea and a rich president who just opens the check book, simply wasn´t true. Go check how much money did Liverpool spend over the past 2 or 3 years… When Mourinho arrived in Chelsea, they didn´t even have a proper place to practice. Now they made the Champs League final and gave Man Utd a good run. But nothing more – more than half of Chelsea´s silverware came in with Mourinho. From being a London team with more or less some posh fans and zero tradition, now they are a true contender in the EPL and in European football in general. Not everybody can make it and money can´t do it alone.

I think being a Chelsea fan you might like to check out this book http://www.webboom.pt/ficha.asp?ID=163323 8)
