Portugal World Cup Win in 2010 Sealed
By: Greg | July 2nd, 2007
You heard it here first, folks: Portugal is going to win the World Cup in 2010. In six words I can tell you why: José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix. The man better known as José Mourinho or “The Special One” confidently told radio station Radio Renascenca: “I really really want to be Portugal’s national team coach, and I believe, at a given moment, the Federation is going to want this also. Therefore I believe it’s inevitable this will happen. It’s inevitable that one day I’ll be the national coach because it’s something I want a lot.”
Cue the music…”Whatever José wants…José gets.” Forget the tactical prowess and knack for sneaking out wins that Mourinho brings to the table, he has one gigantic character trait that the team needs ever so desperately: He’s a born winner.
Sure, Big Phil won the World Cup with Brazil back in 2002, but the players don’t seem to be gelling the way they should given the amount of time he has now spent with them. He lost the 2004 Euro. At home. Against GREECE! No offense to the fantastic team of footballers Greece put together for the tournament, but to a man they should have been no match for the talented Portuguese squad.
Couple Mourinho’s desire with a quote late last year from the Beefy Brazilian : “It is logical that at the end of Euro 2008 I leave when my contract ends. The work of a coach is limited to five or six years.” So basically the door is wide open for the Special One whose comments come just when the Portuguese Football Federation is probably beginning to line candidates up in their minds.
If Mourinho manages to win the Champions League with Chelsea, he can probably say that he’s now accomplished all he wanted to at the club and that the motherland is a-callin’. If Mourinho fails to win the Champions League, owner Roman Abramovich will more likely than not let him go anyway, given his impatience and lack of a completely amiable relationship with Jose.
Given all of these facts, the stars are aligned for Mourinho to take the reins in 2008 and ride the talented horse that is the Portuguese National Team to victory in South Africa. When this happens, I expect to get my Super Smart Psychic Badge from the Offsides Boy Scouts, especially since the “Devastatingly Handsome, Arrogant Prick” badge is getting a bit lonely on my sash.

I would just like to say that I bought the new, pink Benfica change kit today, and it is magnificent. That is all.

it’s clear that Felipao is getting back to the Brazilian squad. With that said, the cup is already Brazilian.
Five years ago, Portugal was doomed to failure in every competition no matter how much talent it had. Felipao changed that, and with his departure, things will return to the usual: Brazil kicking ass, Portugal disappointing, and Argentina watching lift another trophy.

Yes, very interesting turn of events. He even went as far as to say that national team duty wouldn’t necessarily be the last step in his career. That leaves him an opening to coach the national team for a few years and then return to club duty.
It’s likely that Big Phil will step down after Euro2008 so this is clearly very good posturing on Mourinho’s part. We’ll give Scolari a shot at bringing home a title next year, but it seems obvious that Mourinho wants to solidify his position as a coaching G-d. If he brings a WC home to Portugal, they’ll build a statue of him in every city, town and village. He has to get the job first though.

Yeah, let us hope that Mourinho is the one (the VERY special one). I’m not really seeing any other good football manager that could fill in Big Phil’s shoes (with chances of also coaching the Portuguese team, I mean).
And Martha: good for you! I’m also thinking about buying it, it’ll look better on me than on the players, anyway!

Martha: wrong team…
Even if Scolari quits the PT team, I believe he will stay living there. I don’t think he’ll ever go back to coaching BRA soon. But maybe…
I’ll just wait and see the Mourinho soap-opera… Some time ago, he was saying he’d coach PT when he’d retire… Yeah… Market laws are tough, ha…?

But I do believe he will coach the PT team, sometime. I’d honestly like Scolari to stay for the WC in 2010, but I don’t think he will. I think it’ll depend a lot on how EC08 goes… If PT doensn’t reach the last 4, or maybe the Final (which is a lot, considering how strong FRA is, how much ENG wants to show, ITA is reigning world champion, NL’s getting stronger, Czech, POL, etc), he might quit…
But we had something similar, around 94… Carlos Queiroz had an aura of divinity, after the kids U20WC victory in 89 and 91, Sporting kicked out Bobby Robson to hire him, Porto won the PT champ with Bobby Robson, for WC94 Queiroz took over the NT and failed qualifying… OK, you DON’T leave it for the last martch, in Italy, when SWI and ITA were THAT strong. Before the match we needed a draw, after the match we stayed out, behind SWI and ITA…So, I prefer to wait and see how it all goes, how this season at Chelsea goes, etc… Before Scolari, the FCPorto lobby was tremendous in the FPF and limited everything. Mourinho didn’t leave FC Porto in peace with “The President”. Dunno…
I’d love to see him coach PT, naturally!!!

Well if Mourinho gets the job it just seems all the pieces of the puzzle will begin to fit. Portugal is overflowing with mid-fielders….and in my opinion a footbal match is won and lost on the mid-field….between cristiano ronaldo, quaresma, moutinho, nani, thiago…up and comer Bruno Gama Coentrao…the portuguese Pele who is playing at the Under-20 world cup has also shown his knack for play making and ball control….the only thing i feel the Portuguese squad needs to improve on is their defending…carvalho,Andrade, meira, ferreira…and miguel will be older for the world cup the are goin to be aged defenders at there best perhaps but i find they still look a wee bit shaky when other teams begin to attack them. A good formation he may use to utilize all the these talented players is in a 3-4-3 formation. Dominate that mid-field….from the back three i would have Carvalho,Andrade,Meira. In the mid field starting from the right i would put ronaldo,Pele or thiago,Nani,Simao. Finally from the strikers line form the right i would put in Quaresma,in the middle drop Postiga, and in the left the youngster full of piss and vinegar Bruno Gama………..Thats just my opinion lol

[...] Chels. I hope this turns into the Perfect Special One Storm and he slides into the Portugal job, as I predicted he would (albeit after the Euro and a Chels Champions League victory). I certainly hope NOT to see him on [...]
