Portugal Must Blow In Like The Khazri
By: Greg | October 10th, 2007
According to some etymologists and historians Baku, which is the capital city of Azerbaijan, got its name from the fierce winds that blow through it. One of those gale force winds which keep the city relatively cool is called the ‘khazri.’ Hence, you have the heading that they have to blow into this joint like the gale force winds and take all three points from the tie. Hell, they ought to blow in like a fucking hurricane and claim the three points that they will be favored to be gifted from this match. However, this is the Portuguese national team, and too often they allow themselves to perform below expectations. Azerbaijan are bottom of the table with one win (oddly enough over 2nd place Finland) and should be a cakewalk for a Portuguese squad that welcomes back Ricky Ricardo Carvalho from injury. On the way out of the squad due to “taking knocks” (a completely lame way to call getting hurt, but I love being Anglophillically colloquial) are Pepe, Bosingwa, Caneira, Petit, Jorge Andrade, Postiga, and João Tomás. Since Tiago ain’t gettin’ no play over at Juventus, Big Phil has chosen to leave him out of the squizzod. These injuries have led to the inclusion of Tonel, Miguel Veloso, Jorge Ribeiro (Manwich’s bro) and Duda. Here’s the group of guys Philly will be sending out on the pitch from the stands as a spectator:
Keepers of the Sacred Net: Ricardo and Quim
Portuguese Defense Intelligence Agency: Mikey, Hey Yo Bruno Alves, Jorge Ribeiro, Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho, Fernando Meira, and Tony Toni Tonel
Middle Urth: Raul, Meireles, Miguel Veloso, João Moutinho, Manwich, Duda, and Anderson Luis de Souza
50 Foot Women: Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Simão, Ricardo Quaresma, Nuno Gomes, and Hugo Almeida
I’ll go with a 2-0 prediction here. It was 3-0 last time and I’ll give Azerbaijan a goal back for being at home. See both of you tomorrow, I have to farm the interwebs for shit to throw at the screen during the international break.

That sucks about Boswinga. From the 20 minutes of the Porto Liverpool CL match I caught a few weeks ago he seemed like he was one of the few still playing hard at the end so he earned my respect.
I’ve got high hopes for the boys so I’d really like to see a lot of points here. This no winning bullshit has to stop.
Oh, and I’m sure you’ve been made aware of this article at some point but I thought you might find it interesting on the off chance you haven’t…it’s about one particularly enjoyable evening for Cronaldo, Nani, and Anderson: http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/sunday/2007/09/02/our-orgy-with-man-utd-aces-98487-19722284/

Andrew, my wife was actually working that night and got some pics from the Ronaldo party if you’d like them. I’m def. with you on the Bosingwa observations. He was probably the most “in form” (playing the best) out of all of the defenders at the time he went down. He’ll be missed, but Carvalho should provide more than adequate cover in the back. Manwich’s brother is only 25, so I hope he isn’t married yet (for his sake). I mean, I got married at 25 so what the hell do I know?

Greg you’d better hope your wife doesn’t read your blog or your dead meat! And I’m not talking about the good kind (sureesh) either.
Any ideas why Miguel wasn’t called up? Or has he joined Scolari’s black list like Tiago??Posted from

Miguel was called up, I just wise-assed his name and made Miguel into “Mikey”.

You guys see the short list (30 names) for the fifa player of the year award? Besides the obvious political nature of this award, it should come down to these 3 finalists if the the voters saw all of one game last year.
Kaka
Ronaldo
MessiAnd I think they will give it to Kaka for the same reason Ronaldo didn’t get the best young player award in the WC.
But regardless, and putting my own bias aside, you can’t really go wrong with any one of them. They’re both great talents who are young and have much more to give.
I just think if you switched them (Kaka/Ronlado) CR would do better in Italy than Kaka would do in England. Based on that I think CR is a slightly better talent.
How’s that for soap boxing! haha

Messi won’t win because he doesn’t have the experience of being on ballots long enough (ie the reason why Patrick Vieira is there). Cristiano Ronaldo is too pretty to win. Therefore, based on your three finalists, Poopoo will win. Wow what an awful bunch of reasoning aside from the Messi thing. But hey, that’s probably the same thought process FIFA will go though… When in Rome!

Thought process! Hey, hang on there cowboy. Nobody said anything about FIFA having any “thought process”.
I think you just stepped over the line there. hahaTell me how Canavorro and Eto got on the list? One had a horrible year at RM, while the other was out injured most of the year. Meanwhile Totti (who I can’t stand) had an outstanding year and didn’t even get a sniff?
I think FIFA needs to update their dart board with better names on it before they start throwing the darts, I mean selecting the players. haha

I agree…Totti’s absence is pretty confusing. Eto’o had a decent season (when he was healthy that is) but I don’t think he deserves a nod.
It’s all politics.
