Portugal has Gone Up

By: Greg | April 2nd, 2007

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s true. After only one week of toiling in the Coca-Cola Offside League, the Portugal blog has managed to crack into the Barclay’s Premier Offside League. As you can see to the right on the main page, we are currently in danger of being relegated, sitting 11th above only the Champions League. Sincerely though, thanks to all who have read and commented thus far, you’ve made it a blast. I look forward to more open discussion regarding all things Portuguese football for a good deal of time to come.

Ooooh yeah, Benfica and Porto played yesterday. They ended up tying 1-1 after Pepe scored for Porto in the 40th minute on a header from in-form Quaresma’s free kick. In the waning moments of the game, Benfica capitalized on an own goal through midfielder Gonzalez.

From the start, it was all Porto. They had the crisper passing and created the more deserved, better chances. However, Benfica rallied in the 2nd half and put together a myriad of their own chances, most of which Porto’s keeper Helton parried away.

Sporting play tonight and should pick up the points against Beira Mar to create an even tighter logjam at the top.
