Porto Setting Up Well for 3rd Place in 07/08
By: Greg | July 10th, 2007
Further continuing the mass exodus of top-level talent, FC Porto sold central defender Pepe to Real Madrid for 28 million Euros. That makes a total of 58 million Euros gained for winger Anderson (to Manchester United) and now Pepe. Ricardo Quaresma is currently being furiously courted by a number of teams and would be the third big name to pack his bags and take flight from the Dragao this summer.
If the Quaresma move takes place, once it’s all said and done, Porto will have gained about 85 million Euros for three moves this transfer season. At the same time, they’ll probably have lost a few spots in the standings as well, as rivals Sporting and Benfica have not suffered the same level of talent migration as the reigning league champions. Even if Quaresma doesn’t get sold, Porto will have to get some more than serviceable reinforcements to replace the loss of their key central defender and a winger with the creativity and energy of Anderson.
Porto may be following my previous recommendations entirely too closely by selling off their young talent for future gain. However, to this point, they haven’t translated their windfall into fresh reinforcement. Simply selling off big pieces and not replacing them with two or three good players will only be for the team’s detriment and look rather bad in the eyes of fans.

Ricardo to Real Betis as well. We’ll be left with some Eastern Europeans, a splash of Brazilian here and there, and the occasional Greek. Should be quite a battle for 3rd place this year…sigh

I dont know much about the current squad but there was a few tasty youngsters from Porto at the U21 Euros and U20 WC so at least the money will keep rolling in the future. Gama is going to be amazing, God knows why youve loaned him out for next season the man is ready to go.
