Porto Release “New” Home Kits and Vomit Inducing Turquoise / Sea Green Alternates

Porto released their “new” kits today for the upcoming season. You can click the links contained in the post to be taken to footballshirtculture.com (incidentally an awesome website that you can lost on far too easily) and get a more thorough look at each kit. The front sponsors on that site aren’t accurate, but you get the point.
Porto’s home kit remains largely unchanged, with some orange accents and a collar that notifies the world “A vencer desde 1893″ which translates to “Winning since 1893.” A cute touch, something in the vein of what Nike did with the Brasil national team top having the saying “Born to play football” on it. The sponsor on the front has changed from Portugal Telecom to Portugal Telecom’s mobile subsidiary, tmn. Banco Espirito Santo remains on the top back, though as “BES” with their logo rather than the whole name of the bank written out.
The home kits are nice, and I’m a big believer in not doing too much with what works, especially when it’s an understated design. The comment about winning is somewhat arrogant and pompous, but when you’ve performed the way they have, a bit of both are certainly earned as well as deserved.
The away kit is a whole other story. According to Porto criminal cheat President Pinto da Costa, the color was inspired by the Rio Dourado, a river that starts in Spain and empties into the Atlantic Ocean within the Porto city limits. I personally think they’re abysmal. They’re one color and very simple, but the simplicity is lost in the ridiculous coloring, not to mention the absurd SapoDSL frog ad on the front which takes the ridiculosity (eat it, I’m a wordsmith) to a whole new level. I don’t get why so many teams are going to this crossing guard-esque violently eye burning fluorescent / iridescent color palette.
If they want to be ridiculous, they might as well go retro and bring back some sweet ass 80’s keeper shirt designs and use them as alternate outfield player kits instead. Until then, for me, “Hey, hey… Ho, Ho… Shitty kit colors have got to go.” That’s right: droppin’ some PCU knowledge on ya ass. Fo’ the ‘08. Seeee yaaaaaaaa.
