On Today’s Menu: Portuguese Turnover

By: Greg | April 25th, 2007

turnoverNaval are probably blasting the Who today, with a theme of “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” Manager Mariano Barreto has left Naval and is being supplanted by the man he replaced in December, Fernando Mira. That’s Fernando Mira the interim coach, not Fernando Meira the Portuguese international defender.

Mira was installed as the interim boss last November through December when Rogério Gonçalves left for Braga. In case you were wondering, yes, Gonçalves has since left Braga and was replaced by current (as this post goes to publication) manager Jorge Costa.

Now far be it from me to think that anyone would give two hoots about a mid-level team with no league or European aspirations changing bosses. The real news here is that it’s the FIFTEENTH managerial change in the Liga this season alone. Barreto apparently left in this case because he was more interested in cultivating home grown talent. If the current success of Portuguese players on the world stage is any indication, Barreto may have been on to something. Why not develop the young Portuguese talent and try to hold on to them rather than farming the players for future sale? That’ll be one way to improve the league’s stature worldwide, for sure.

A completely unrelated COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!!!! Shred the scousers!!!

It seems like a common theme for managers to be fired all the time in leagues like Portugal’s. I wonder if it does the clubs the least bit of good. They can say to their fans that they are trying to do something to improve, but in the end a lot of turnover can’t be a good thing.
