Notes and Nibbles
By: Greg | August 9th, 2007Since the news lately is split up among a few different things, I figured I’d give you a sampler platter of what’s up in Portuguese football…
Jalapeno Poppers – Nani struck a sublime finish against Glentoran in a split squad preseason friendly. I don’t know if he’s necessarily going to see this much space to create without serious attempts to impede his movement in the Premier League, but the goal’s a peach nonetheless. The Dominique Moceanu impersonations after goals were supposed to stop, but maybe substitute coach Carlos Queiroz can tell him in Portuguese this time and he’ll understand…
Hot Wing(er)s – While Martha may think Ricardo Quaresma’s a “hot” commodity for other reasons, a number of clubs are apparently inquiring more seriously for the Portuguese winger’s services. As a result of the teams that have expressed interest (Chelsea, Real Madrid, etc), Porto have reportedly slapped a massive 40 million Euro price tag on the 5′8″ marksman. While he does appear to have a belly that you can wash clothes on, 40 million seems way too much for a guy who had an awful showing in the Spanish Liga a few years back and has shown flashes of immaturity in the past while not coming back to defend his position at all. I’ve seen crazier things happen, and don’t get me wrong I’d love to have Quaresma on the Chels, but all the hype and price gouging seems little more than fluff to me at this point.
Coconut Shrimp - This one is not so much Portuguese football news as it is a fun way to fit shrimp into the whole sampler platter motif. Apparently Cameroon are considering Arthur Jorge again for the vacant national team head coaching spot. Since multiple people from Cameroon are called Camarões in Portuguese, the headline from A Bola essentially reads “Arthur Jorge is a candidate to be the selector of the Shrimps.” Outstanding.
PS – I ran across an amazing (probably NSFW) website today. It’s shepherded by my new favorite person EVER. The site speaks the truth. That’s all I’ll say.

Fluff perhaps, but I would complement Porto for setting the price high and being aggressive in asking fee. This stems the flow of talent out of the league at least for the while. Also Porto attempts to re-invest capital to try to field best team it can, ie they got Diego a few years back after the huge Chelsea money they got for Fereira/Carvalho. See Lucho and Lima on current side.
It would be easy to sell Quaresma for his “real value”, ie. 20-25 m Eu, but Porto is willing to forgoe the sale and maybe have a deep run in CL and win the league again.
Personally, I’d prefer him to play at a big club too, although, I feel RM would not be a good fit.

1)Oh my god there’s a Quaresma website.
2)Even I believe that price is outrageous. Apparently they’ve decided they want to keep him for another season.Posted from
