Not to be outdone by Rivals Porto, Benfica Introduce Their New Kits

By: Greg | July 9th, 2008

As Porto rolled out their “new” home and sea green away kits yesterday, Benfica also made sure not to be late to the party and introduced their new garb to the world.

Their red home kit looks much more aggressive and sleeker in the past with no collar and black accents on the sleeves and body. Adidas did a great job with their home kit in my opinion, and the smaller “tmn” logo as opposed to the big Portugal Telecom square aids in the sleeker look.

The white alternate looks a bit too much like AC Milan’s away stripe for my liking. With the red and black accents on the collar smack of the Rossoneri’s top that is all white and features the black and red accents running down the shoulders. I happen to like white kits and think they look real sharp. However, the similarities to AC Milan aside, the thing that really kills this top is the huge fucking frog ad in the middle of it. It looks like a t-shirt a kid might get after going on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride in Disney World. I understand they’re the sponsor, but jeez.

So, in all, I’d say the home kit is a 8.75/10 and the alternate comes in around a 5/10. Divide those numbers to get a decimal, if you prefer not to work in fractions.

that home kit is pretty sharp but i agree about the away one with that big ass frog on it…are their sponsors fisher price? that looks like it’d be called “mY fIrSt BeNfIcA jErsEy” or something and you’d wear it with overalls. nobody is going to take that seriously. i was thinking about paying more attention to benfica this season but i think im having a change of heart, because as we all know you’re supposed to base your loyalties on jerseys (see: 8/10 girls during NCAA march madness who rock the brackets doing just that)

“Nobody is going to take that seriously?” Are you kidding? Have you ever spent time with the Portuguese people? Trust me, the FROG is going to be a hit! I can just see it now… During a Champions League…Err..Uefa Cup match, Benfica will run onto the pitch as the Estadio De Luz blasts the Crazy Frog music! The crowd goes wild!

These sponsors keep killing me… That ugly ass Portugal Telecom Logo has kept me from buying jerseys for years.

Not to be outdone by Nelson from the U.S. “I wanna get me some DIG’EM SMACKS!” I would rather have the “ghey” color away kit.

Awww shit, Nelson v Nelson battle has been spawned by a wide-eyed frog mascot. If you guys wish to settle this over a dance off involving dressing up as sapoASDL frog and laying out the cardboard so you can show us your moves to the latest Armin van Buuren beats. Or not.
