Jornada 9 Ends Porto’s Win Streak

By: Greg | November 6th, 2007

mountportAs you found out here yesterday, Belenenenenenenenses (1 ‘en’ for every one of Porto’s wins prior to the draw) slowed Porto’s avalanche down Mount Portugal with a 1-1 draw on Friday night.

While Porto remain unbeaten, it’s nice to know that not every team will be laying over and handing them the good ol’ petroleum jelly this season. I’ve got way too much to get to today with the Champions League in full swing and a massive lunch scheduled at the newest Portuguese place which opened up around the corner from work (I hear 15 pounds knocking on my door waiting to invade my slim figure). Keeping all of this in mind, Maritimo and V.Guimarães were nice enough to finish up their match last night in time for a full board of results, superlatives, and even… a table! Yay!

Porto 1 - 1 Belenenses
Leixões 3 - 0 Braga
P.Ferreira 1 - 2 Benfica
Académica 3 - 3 E.d.Amadora
Boavista 3 - 3 V.Setubal
U.d.Leiria 1 - 3 Nacional
Sporting 4 - 1 Naval
Maritimo 0 - 1 V.Guimarães

Hero of the Week — Ze Pedro, Belenenses – The man who put an end to the Porto winning juggernaut is this week’s hero. While it wasn’t exactly a win for O Belem, taking any measure of points away from a Porto match thusfar this season is no small task. After the ball found his feet, he managed to stay up on them and poke the ball into the Porto net. A solid efford with deserved result for Ze Pedro. See the highlights directly below these well constructed sentences.

Goats of the Week — Portuguese Football Presidents – ANOTHER manager sacked this week!? This time it was U.d.Leiria’s Paulo Duarte who dropped from the coaching gallows into the unemployment line. He is replaced by Vitor Oliveira. Oliveira guided Leixões into the BWINLiga last year and was thanked for his hard work by being released (how else?). While U.d.Leiria ARE in last place, how can more than a quarter (5 of 16) of the bosses in the Portuguese top flight be gone already? The season isn’t even HALF OVER YET. Maybe someone ought to take a look at who’s doing the hiring. This is getting laughable.

Clean Sheets of the Week – Nilson (V.Guimarães) and Beto (Leixões)
