Jornada 8 Pre-Recap and Joyous Dish Of Joybeams

By: Greg | October 29th, 2007

aduI’m home today waiting for both the gas and satellite installation technicians. I couldn’t care less about cooking gas being enabled, and given the frequency at which my wife actually uses the stove I can pretty safely say that she probably couldn’t care less either. However, now that I’ve vacated my previous premises and am in a posh new downtown apartment, I am permitted to have a satellite dish thrown up on the building. This means that I no longer am going to have to go to the local PorkChop watering hole in order to fulfill my blogging obligations and watch some Portuga football. I can enjoy, from the comfort of my own couch, a number of matches due to Dish Network’s offering of Portuguese channels. Hooray. I’m so excited that I may be forced to go to the bar to watch a few more matches just to celebrate. Porto still have a match to play tonight against Leixões and Braga face off against Naval, so a full recap will not be here until tomorrow. However, I can tell you that Freddy Adu’s fast becoming a welcome addition in the eyes of Benfica’s faithful. His late goal put 10 man Benfica ahead for good against one of this year’s surprise performers Maritimo and pulled the Encarnados up into 2nd place behind Porto. Kisses ALL AROUND! See you tomorrow, enjoy the quick hit scores from below.

V. Guimarães 2 – 1 U.d.Leiria
Belenenses 0 – 0 Académica
V. Setúbal 3 – 1 Paços de Ferreira
Nacional 0 – 0 Sporting
E. Amadora 0 – 0 Boavista
Benfica 2 – 1 Marítimo

Glad to see that your Offside salary is allowing you to move up in the world, Greg.

I have a somewhat unrelated question too: Whatever happened to Postiga and Hugo Viana? It seems like I never see them mentioned in National Team reports…ever. The reason I ask is because I watched the glorious Portugal vs. England PSO from 06 again last night. Also, do you think Deco and Maniche will make it to WC 2010? I was looking at the current ages of the players and I can’t see some of them playing for the Seleccao much longer (Petit is one that comes to mind). I’ll be sad to see some of them go. Since I use your blog for all my Portuguese footballing news I’m too lazy/stubborn to look elsewhere. Thanks

Andrew – Both have been injured and out for decent spells of time. They’re both young still (Postiga’s 25, Viana’s 24) and can work their way back into playing time at the national level. Unfortunately for both of them, a number of players have come up in the past few matches and have shone rather brightly (namely Miguel Veloso, Makukula, and Hugo Almeida). I like the options that Makukula and Almeida bring to the front with their size and strength. Scolari certainly has his hands full with who he will select. Hopefully they’ll have enough time to allow players to step up before next year’s tournament and Scolari will go the “Mourinho” route and select form over prestige and past accomplishments. In regards to the players you mentioned, they all are midfield players. The strength of the squad has been and looks to continue to be the middle of the pitch. Who knows where these players will be health and skill wise in 2 or 3 years? It’s really anyone’s guess.
