Jornada 5 Recap: Familiar Faces in First Places
By: Greg | October 9th, 2008The league really has to change its name. I know that it’s allegedly called “Liga Sagres” after the beer company “Sagres,” but without commercializing it, it’s the “Portuguese Liga.” However, given the way the league has shook out in the past few years, it might as well be the “PORTOguese Liga.” Please God don’t give us another frigging year of Porto parking their asses at the top and running away with it… Please?
Naval 1 – 1 Belenenses
Académica 1 – 1 Nacional
E. Amadora 1 – 0 Trofense
Rio Ave 3 – 2 P. Ferreira
Sporting 1 – 2 Porto
V.Guimarães 0 – 0 Braga
Leixões 1 – 1 Benfica
V.Setúbal 0 – 2 Marítimo
Hero of the Week — Bruno Alves, Porto — His first half free kick was the difference in Lisbon, netting Porto a 2-1 win and first place. (Again)
Goats of the Week — Rui Patricio and Paulo Bento, Sporting — Shitty tactics and even shittier goalkeeping earned Sporting a spot five places below Porto, looking up at the Dragons from below. (Again)
Clean Sheets of the Week — Nelson (E.d.Amadora), Nilson (V.Guimarães), Eduardo (Braga), and Marcos (Marítimo).
Table (After 5 Matches Played)
1.) Porto – 11
2.) Nacional – 10
3.) E.d.Amadora – 10
4.) Leixões – 10
5.) Benfica – 9
6.) Sporting – 9
7.) Naval – 8
8.) V.Guimarães- 8

12.) Rio Ave – 5
13.) Braga – 5
14.) Belenenses – 2
15.) Paços de Ferreira – 1

The league is off until the 26th of the month for international break. We (or more accurately, ‘I’), however, will keep on truckin’ over on the Portuguese National Team site. Joy.

I’m glad I fell asleep soon after Bruno Alves’s free kick because that was probably the highlight of the game. Postiga isn’t impressing me like I hoped he would be either…AND HOW DID EVERYBODY LET PORTO GET IN FIRST AGAIN! I want to give up on Portugal.

Moons ago I was a Benfica socio. 1964. However over the years I have given up on Football until now. Suddenly I am having a Catharsis and Naval seems to me to be the up and coming Star of Portuguese Football and possibly even the European game.
Why I do not know. But I am rarely wrong. Get on a good thing now.Posted from

We are greatly encouraged by Navals strength of character and inspired by our Hino, will destroy Benfica on Sunday

Naval’s performance against Benfica on Sunday showed a lot of character. In fact a draw would have been a fair result. Benfica had 45,700 fans sometimes supporting a side that lacked conviction and they could have been 2 down in the first 10 minutes. A great save early on kept Benfica goaless at half time. Naval’s courageous group of supporters(about 27 I reckon) had moments to celebrate and on occassion out shouted the 45, 700 Benficistas.
