Jornada 28 Preview: Why AS Roma and Its Fans Need to Go Away
By: Greg | April 25th, 2008
I usually start each preview off with some witty banter but this week I have to discuss AS Roma and its huge fan base which have camped themselves here on The Offside. Let me start off by saying that chris’ blog about AS Roma on this website is easily the most active and most read…
Okay, I think we’re clear…
That should be enough text for the preview on the front page of the main website. Hopefully the title and above ruse were sufficient to get my monthly readership numbers up and through the roof. Sorry to any of you who came here expecting to see me bash the team or its fans, I just wanted to run a quick experiment to see how much better my page view statistics are this month as a result of mentioning the Giallorossi. To all you Roma people, thanks for the stat boost and welcome. While you’re here, why not catch up on some fantastically thrilling Portuguese football and equally brilliant blogging? On to the preview we go…
This week features some excellent contests, with 1st playing 2nd in Porto and V.Guimarães, as well as Benfica entertaining surging Belenenses. On the other extreme, last and next to last are facing off as well with Leiria playing host to Leixões. Overall, it’s a solid docket all around and a fantastic first course to begin the final three weeks of the season.
-= Jornada 28 =- All times are local. This week’s edition of FixtureFacts includes each club’s hometown, because some teams managed to be a bit more creative than simply calling themselves “FC Porto.” Although, as you’ll see, creativity when it comes to football club names is apparently limited to mostly calling oneself by the town you play in.
Friday, April 25th @ 19:30 — Braga (Braga) v. P. Ferreira (Paços de Ferreira)
Saturday, April 26th @ 19:45 — Benfica (Lisbon) v. Belenenses (Lisbon) **Yay Derby!**
Sunday, April 27th @ 16:00 — Nacional (Funchal) v. Académica (Coimbra)
Sunday, April 27th @ 16:00 — Naval (Figueira da Foz) v. Boavista (Porto)
Sunday, April 27th @ 17:00 — U.d.Leiria (Leiria) v. Leixões (Matosinhos)
Sunday, April 27th @ 18:00 — V.Guimarães (Guimarães) v. Porto (Porto)
Sunday, April 27th @ 20:30 — Sporting (Lisbon) v. Marítimo (Funchal)
Monday, April 28th @ 19:45 — V. Setúbal (Setúbal) v. E.d.Amadora (Amadora)
Have a lovely weekend, enjoy some football, some friends, and some fun. Sorry if you were kinda disappointed in this week’s edition of FixtureFacts, but my brain is all gripped up with anticipation of tomorrow’s Chelsea – ManU game. Also, sorry again to those Roma faithful / haters who came here looking for something they didn’t get, if you made it this far then thanks for reading. Kisses ALL AROUND!!

I’m really glad you Giallorossi have a sense of humor. Take care of our lil’ Antunes, he’s a great buy on your part at a great time. You guys are now the official Serie A team of the Portugal Offside. Forza Roma!

So Greg who you supporting from Portugal? Nicely done tho with the Roma fans
.. Shame there isn’t much Portugese football here on TV, always enjoyed the matches I’ve seen so far this year (mostly Porto – Benfica, Benfica – Sporting etc. the big matches) Too bad the competition is already decided tho.Posted from

Wow since I posted that from my BlackBerry I get to be temporarily Canadian as well I guess… Antunes is already on all of Portugal’s radar as a defender of the future. We can pump out wingers to no end so to have a quality extreme back is a high value to us. I’m glad he went to Italy so young in his career, it will aid in his development for sure

Johnny, my mother in law is a Sporting supporter, I’ll let you guess who she allows me to support from Portugal

Yes Greg, we’ll take good care of Itunes… Serie A will do wonders for his abilities. Great post!

Here’s a comment for being clever

One thing for sure, Serie A is not as defensive as it once was but still can nurture defenders so I guess coming to us was a really good move on iTunes part. Cicinho said he learnt a lot already from Mister Spaletti and that is why he doesnt complain that he wasnt a starter in lots of games. iTunes is loved by fans and he’ll be great

Gabriella – Porto’s president and Porto are being tried separately, as they have secured separate counsel. Current speculation is that Porto will be docked six points next year and Porto-based club Boavista will be relegated. Porto being relegated would be a monstrous shock. An exodus would be predicted, but Portuguese teams big and small sell prospects regularly each year (see: almost all of Manchester United’s midfield) so any further, huge sale of talent beyond that would surprise me.

I saw the opening title, and was ready to lose my shit!!
As the enforcer of all things Roma, it is part of my daily duties
(DDR)
HAHA.We love us some iTunes, and possibly Quaresma.
Crynaldo on the other hand…. Well, just see his infamous blog.

I see, well I am a fan of Quaresma and love to see him at Roma. Slim chance it seems though

I’m a big Quaresma guy myself, he’s almost certain to move, but he may not go as high as many think price wise due to his mediocre at best stint at Barcelona.

he was very young then, Roma fans would go bonkers for him. This is what happened when Cicinho arrived. Hundreds of fans went to greet him

If you wann piss a romano off, just tell them that Lisbon is actually older than Rome (which is actually true), hence, ours (at least mine) is the oldest city of the 7 hills…
