Jornada 1 Recap: Benfica Need To Wake Up Fast
By: Greg | August 25th, 2008
What a frigging weather nightmare Tropical Storm Fay was this past week. My wife and sister in law had the bright idea of visiting their parents in Florida in August. This brings the joy of Hurricane Season as well as unbearable humidity and the need to drive at least 45 minutes to get to any destination you may seek.
The storm wasn’t really all fierce winds and the like, but it was raining where I was staying at a rate of 3″ an hour at some points of the day. That’s an inch every twenty minutes! And half an inch every ten! And!!! Sorry, here’s your scores.
V.Guimarães 1 - 1 V.Setúbal
P. Ferreira 0 - 2 Braga
Sporting 3 - 1 Trofense
E. Amadora 1 - 0 Académica
Leixões 1 - 3 Nacional
Naval 1 - 0 Marítimo
Porto 2 - 0 Belenenses
Rio Ave 1 - 1 Benfica
Hero of the Week — Nuno Gomes, Benfica — His 56th minute equalizer saved a few peoples’ jobs over in BenficaLand.
Goats of the Week — Benfica – You guys go out and buy a zillion attackers in the off-season and all you can muster in the opening match of the season is a goal from Nuno Gomes to salvage a tie against newly promoted Rio Ave? Way to announce your presence with authority this season! The Quique Sack Watch may have begun.
Clean Sheets of the Week — Eduardo (Braga), Nelson (E.d.Amadora), Jorge Baptista (Naval), and Helton (Porto)
Porto are strolling along like last season never ended. Sporting won convincingly as well but had defender Polga sent off around the hour mark for a hard, two-footed tackle in the box (see YouTubage below). In my opinion, the card was super harsh as he did tackle from behind but not directly behind. The Trofense player was also never going to get injured from such a tackle. I’ve got more work than I can handle right now so let me get outta here and back to real life.

Djaló’s goal was my favorite goal, even though it was not as important as Nuno Gomes’s. The build up was as impressive as the back heel.

Steve, agreed. When they get the ball moving through the midfield and really connect, the product makes me think Sporting have a real shot this year.

Why are all the Portuguese derbies done by Week 5? I’d love your take.
