I’m Back… Back in a New York Groove!

By: Greg | May 8th, 2007

InnoutFresh off a business trip to San Diego, I’m back and ready to shout into the dark. Let’s just screw the pomp and circumstance and jump right in, shall we? Going back two weeks, Porto lost and neither Benfica nor Sporting managed to capitalize as they canceled each other out in a 1-1 draw.

All three teams won this past week, putting Porto on top with a virtual four point (1 win, massive goal differential) 3 point lead over Sporting(who holds the tiebreaker with better head-to-head results: thanks for the info Jorge, I had NO idea) and a four point lead over third place Benfica.

With two more games each to play, Benfica probably has the easiest road home with games against bottom of the table V.Setubal and Academica, who are just barely above the drop zone. Porto face middling Paços de Ferreira and Aves who could prove dangerous given their relatively decent form of late and the fact that they’re deeply entrenched in a battle to stave off relegation. Sporting clash with Academica and fourth place Belenenses who they will also face in the Taça de Portugal final on the 27th of May.

I’ll obviously be supporting Sporting over the next few weeks given their status as the team we’ve chosen to support on this little island of the blogosphere.

Since I’m still adjusting time-wise and am playing 1 week worth of catch-up at work, I’ll keep this one short and sweet. I’ll be back tomorrow with a full table and examination of both ends of the table. I can’t focus right now, I’m dreaming of In-N-Out burger.

Thank goodness you’re back! I’m full of questions. Full or two, anyway.

1)Why are Benfica playing an exhibition match in NYC smack in between the end of the season and Euro 2006 qualifiers? I’m excited and all, just befuddled.

2)You know all things Portuguese, right? So where do I go online to get tickets to the Figo Foundation’s benefit match in Lisbon next month? No pressure or anything, but my happiness depends entirely on you.

    1) The game’s going to be played in Newark, NJ NOT New York. As a native and present resident of New Jersey, this feeling of inadequacy pervades all aspects of our lives. There is a HUGE Portuguese population in Newark, so I guess they have summoned their team and their team has answered the call.

    2) Try calling the stadium direct: 00 351 217 516 523 / 217 516 000. The foundation website seems defunct or not operational. There’s a good chance they’re going to speak Portuguese though, so find a buddy who can speak the lingo and go from there. Good luck! ;-)

1)HA! My bad sorry. And don’t I know it — I’ll be the one trapped in tunnel traffic for an hour on my way out there.

2)Ah-ha, a phone number! That’s progress indeed, thanks.

hey there. just wanted to let you know that in fact Porto does not have a virtual 4 point lead, since by our championship rules, when two teams end up with the same points in the end, the team that wins is the one who got the better results in the matches between both teams. in that possible scenario (let’s hope it doesn’t happen, since i’m a Porto season ticket holder and i want to win the double), Sporting has the upper hand, having drawn Porto at home (1-1) and beating us (i was there, unfortunately) at our own place 0-1, with a great free-kick goal by Tello.

anyway, i lived in San Francisco for a year and it’s funny to see how Americans see Soccer. well, keep up the good work, i’m a regular reader and i’m enjoying it!
