Going Down?
By: Greg | July 18th, 2007
No, you sick, sex-crazed beasts, I mean down in the sense of an elevator. Or, in the case of Ricardo, Filipe Teixeira (pronounced Teh-Share-Uh), and potentially either Nuno Gomes or Helder Postiga, down a level in the sense of where they’re transferring to.
In Teixeira’s case, you can make the argument that even though West Brom aren’t in the Premier League that they may be better than Academica. That’s all well and good. But why not ply your trade in the top flight of a league that’s fast gaining respect and recognition worldwide? The level of players in the Portuguese first league are garnering so much attention that they’re being sold off to some of the most storied clubs for embarrassing amounts of cash. Maybe he feels he can get better exposure to potential Premier League suitors if he’s physically closer to them and getting more coverage in England as a result. This fact coupled with a definite pay raise probably moved Teixeira to drop his refusal to play anything less than first division football and move to the Coke Side of Life.
Ricardo is a player whose move I’ve examined already and must have gone to Spain to avoid in-laws or something…
This brings us to Nuno Gomes and Helder Postiga. Both are coveted by Real Betis bottom-neighbors Levante (which ironically translates to ‘raise’ in English), and both are currently members of Benfica and Porto, respectively. Barring a miracle, if they were to sign away long-term from their current clubs they would never taste serious international club competition again. Money can be the only draw to this Spanish bottom-lingerer, and if the choice is made based on a pay raise, there better be enough in there to buy a picture of the Champions League trophy and some pride, because both will be gone for some time if the players were to make this move.

What about Ricardo Costa going to Wolfsburg? This is a small town club without fans and without flair. I was personally quite surprised and a bit disappointed by that move.

No offence intended to Levante or any of the players you mentioned, but the club does have a record of fighting relegation, and not always successfully. Unless the players in question enjoy such an activity, I really can’t see why they’d want to move. It’s not like the Spanish league is overflowing with money like the Premiership.

Ricardo has a considerably BIGGER salary now, I think. But it was all ver peacefull with Sporting, for what I gathered.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Postiga leaving FCP. Nobody trusts him in FCP, not even himself - apparently the only one who does is Scolari and, well, he does score for PT (?) - and maybe he’d get to actually be on the starting 11 of some team…
Also I honestly don’t believe Nuno Gomes will leave Benfica, nor Simao. And I also don’t see Quaresma leaving FCP for Atl. Madrid. No matter how much they pay FCP… But it could be nice to see him in England, say, in Liverpool… Would be nice to see him and CR fight for the “PT-winger-spotlights”…
Super curious top see how Pepe will do in Real, this season… I believe he’s hugelly underestimated by the crowd, but OK… It’s Real, they don’t know him… We understand…
Loved the pic, Greg…

One of the Portuguese papers was convinced this morning that Lazio are going to buy Nuno Gomes. And, of course, another said there was no way he was leaving.
