Final Decision Handed Down On Porto’s Champions League Participation This Year
By: Greg | July 15th, 2008
After a whole ass load of “they’re in” and “they’re out” conjecturing, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has informed UEFA that in spite of the evidence brought forth by Portuguese giants Benfica and flavor of the month Vitória de Guimarães, Porto are to participate in this year’s iteration of the Champions League tournament. Had the court decided in their favor, Benfica would have jumped from UEFA Cup qualification to the third qualification round of the Champions League and Guimarães would have gone straight into the group stages. Benfica obviously take the largest hit with this decision, being that they’re now doomed to UEFA Cup “goodness.”
This decision puts to rest a long, protracted, and frankly somewhat embarrassing dragging through the European mud of Portuguese Football. As if it isn’t shitty enough for Portuguese football across Europe, the poor performances put forth in international club competition recently (especially the past year) are going to lead to us losing key spots in European tournaments in the coming seasons.
While the Portuguese football tribunals punished Porto in the most absurd manner for their bribery scandal, it’s time to let sleeping dogs rot in the gutter and move on. Besides, the best way to watch your favorite players on your most favorite of Portuguese teams excel in Europe is to wait for them to be sold larger teams who have a virtual stranglehold on the Champions League. Haven’t you figured that out yet?

Excellent news for us Porto fans, and while I agree with Greg that the punishment handed out so far has been absurd it is time for us to move on and play. That also means that Ricky Q staysand we can buy another player.

Haha good luck with Ricky Q staying…as far as it seems, he’s all but wearing blue & black in Milan

Glad we’re officially in, but to be honest, wasn’t reaaly worried that we might not have been (decision was always going our way). RQ? I dunno about him, he’s a great player, but maybe it’s time to cash in on him (don’t think this year he’ll be 100%). Sad to see paulo go to atleti, there was an unspoken hero for us the past two years! Ps – Hope benfica get drawn against ac milan in uefa cup, i’m portuguese, but the more benfica looses, the happier i am! Forca porto, somos campeos outra vez esta temporada!!!
