Europe’s On Stage, It’s Time for The Final Countdown
By: Greg | May 18th, 2007
Obviously not all of Europe is on some stage waiting for a countdown to the end of the Portuguese season… I’m just envisioning Swedish rock band Europe on stage playing The Final Countdown to get all fans of soccer amped up for this weekend’s decisive matches. What, that song doesn’t get your blood flowing? Maybe Sirius by Alan Parsons Project? Rock and Roll Part 2 (I have NEVER heard part one) by Gary Glitter tickle your fancy then? Either way, blast motivational mainstay Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger and get to reading this season’s final version of FixtureFacts, complete with a picture of Simao Sabrosa in his underpants:
Maritimo (building a new 10,000 seater stadium for the 2008/09 season) vs Boavista (main rival is Porto)
Braga (stole their kit colors from ARSEnal in the 1930s) vs Nacional (aka the Alvinegros or The White-and-Blacks)
Sporting (play at Estádio José Alvalade – Século XXI) vs Belenenses (manager Jorge Jesus)
Naval (manager Rogério Gonçalves) vs V.Setubal (knocked out in the 1st round of this year’s UEFA Cup)
Benfica (boast 12 million supporters worldwide) vs Academica (founded in 1876)
E.d.Amadora (won the Liga da Honra in 1992/93) vs U.d.Leiria (lost the “losers’” Intertoto Cup final in 2004 to Lille)
Beira Mar (wear yellow and black at home) vs Paços de Ferreira (whole team is from a Portuguese-speaking country except for Bolivian Gualberto Mojica)
Porto (are gunning for back-to-back league championships) vs Aves (will inherit a whole hell of a lot of fans from Sporting and Benfica this weekend)
There you have it, grab a few Sagres or Super Bock beers and watch the carnage unfold. I have to search the interwebs for my Aves jersey.
