Down the Stretch they Come!
By: Greg | May 9th, 2007
In honor of this past weekend’s Kentucky Derby, I figured I’d lead off with a horse racing reference. The stretch run is here and the relegation battle is really no clearer than it was a few weeks ago. It seems that each week, some team decides to dip its toe into the frigid cold pool that is relegation. Aves, Beira Mar, and V.Setubal figure to the be the triumvirate jostling for survival to the end. Academica are in range but are probably safe.
Beira Mar have the easiest road home playing Nacional and Paços de Ferreira. Aves face off against E.d.Amadora and Porto while V.Setubal have Benfica and Naval to deal with.
Aves and V.Setubal therefore play one of the “Big Three” each and Beira Mar have two mid-level teams. You could make the argument that one great team and one low level team is better to play against than two mid-level teams, but I wouldn’t want to see Benfica or Porto if I needed points with the league championship still potentially up in the air. In a completely unrelated story, I got pretty tanked the other night and was missing the World Cup way too much. So I dug up the video at the bottom which was hands down the most moving promo ESPN put together and still has not lost its effect on me. Chiggy check the table below for the league’s current complexion and judge for yourself who will be saved from the drop…
