Do Europeans Do Anything Besides Drink and Gamble?
By: Greg | September 26th, 2007
Look out on the pitch this weekend. Check the clubs’ shirt sponsors, the boards behind the touchline, and maybe even the name of the league or competition the clubs are participating in. I’m willing to bet that between the kits, the ads, and the tie sponsors, you’ll find that a great many of them are supported by booze and gambling. In the great tradition of vices supporting sport, the third round of the Carlsberg Cup takes place today in Portugal. The winner of this brand new cup tournament earns a berth into the UEFA Cup. This obviously makes the cup worth more to the middling upper level teams and all second division clubs. As a result, the Big Three can be expected to run out younger players and will probably feature talent such as Freddy Adu from Benfica and the hydrogen two oxygen delivery engineer at Porto.
In this round, the top eight teams of the gambling site-sponsored Liga are added to the mix and play whomever has survived from the previous two rounds which comprised all of the Liga da Honra teams as well as the bottom six from last year’s top flight table plus the promoted clubs. The teams which enter in this round have the particularly daunting (daunting as in trying to climb four stairs) task of having to play the games away at their theoretically “lesser” opponents. After the tournament is reduced to eight teams, they’ll be thrown into two groups of four and play a round robin format. The resulting top two teams will then face off for the Portuguese Pint Glass of Glory. Enough of trying to suck any more fluff out of this limp topic, here’s the fixtures with the Liga da Honra sides in italics and the club I choose to win the tie in bold (because my opinion is the most important). Enjoy the rest of the day. I’ll be back tomorrow with a recap of the results and any potentially fun and wacky stuff from the wide world of Portuguese Football. Kisses ALL AROUND!!
