Big Three Fashion Statements for 07/08
By: Greg | July 17th, 2007Most of today’s news is simply a reinforcement of the transfer rumors I touched on yesterday. While the asking price for Simao has been set at around 22 million Euros, according to Spanish sports outlet As, Atletico Madrid’s bid is about 14.75 million Euros. If they really want Simao, Atletico are probably going to have to pay in the neighborhood of 18-20 million.
Given the paltry amount of news currently stirring the transfer rumor pot, I decided to take a quick look at the new garb that Porto, Sporting, and Benfica will be wearing this coming season. I wonder if the release of a new kit has more to do with keeping the team’s look fresh or selling overpriced t-shirts to crazed fans. I think I’ll go with the latter (after I confirm shipping for my new Sporting top)…
Starting off with the Champions… FC Porto home on the right and alternate on the left… I happen to really like the big collar and more stripes of the home jersey this year, gives it an older school feel. The away jersey you can keep, it does nothing for me.

Next up is Sporting. The home jersey really didn’t change much, just with some black accents and maybe a higher quantity of striping, it’s hard to tell. The alternate is a bit boring, I may have to see it on someone to really decide how I feel…

Finally we have Benpinka… Um Benfica. The home jersey is real clean and has the white collar which I find to be slick. The alternate jersey… I’m sorry Martha, but here’s what I’d much rather be wearing. I think pink does nothing for the team and is nowhere in the color scheme. I’m not a macho guy who can’t wear pink either: I have a few pink dress shirts for work and my apartment’s bathroom has pink tile in it. But for me…this jersey just doesn’t work.

Greg, color me ignorant, but I see the Portuguese teams all have the same home/away shirt sponsors, how does that work out? Thanks.
P.S. BTW, Thanks for the Jorge Fucile info. Next time I’m in NY to see my brother we’ll have to get a beer.

Yea, I’ve been wondering about the sponsorship thing. Anyway, Porto’s home and away looks perfect. The Benfica and Sporting home are looking good as well, but the aways…

Well, Nuno Gomes looks good in pink — I have a feeling that was a primary selling point of those kits. And pink or not, it’s a hell of a lot better than those old school (and not in a good way) Porto kits. Nice v-necks.

I love how they all have the same sponsors but different kit makers. I think all three have really nice home kits (though Benfica’s looks a little too Bayern Munichy for me) and poor away ones.

Brian – No problem and Beers are always welcome. Martha – You share an attraction to Nuno Gomes with my wife which I will never understand. Almost all – the main shirts have the sponsor Portugal Telecom. The ‘tmn’ logo on the away shirts is the mobile(wireless) arm for Portugal Telecom. I personally find it really odd myself that all 3 have the same sponsor but couldn’t dig anything up on it as to why or any manifestation of widespread dislike for the situation or whatever. Besides, aren’t Rangers and Celtic both sponsored by the same company?

I was going to start posting all sorts of pictorial proof, Greg, then I realized there was problem not point in trying to persuade you. Suffice to say your wife is a wise woman.
