Benfica Resurrected
By: Greg | April 24th, 2007
Jornada 26 is in the books and the immovable force that is the “Big 3″ all won their respective games.
Benfica finally got a much needed break this week and managed to put up three on middling Maritimo, even without Simao who was left out due to a bad left knee. Miccoli essentially stamped his ticket back to Serie A-bound Juventus with a pair of goals to go with Kostas Katsouranis’ late penalty.
This sets up this coming weekend’s battle with second place Sporting. One of these two teams needs to win in order to put together a realistic stretch attempt to catch top of the table Porto who face off against bottom half Boavista in the next Jornada. Boavista are fresh off a loss to Estrela da Amadora who improved their chances of staying away from the drop zone with a nine point cushion. Setubal climbed out of the drop zone with a tie of Braga coupled with Aves and Beira Mar both losing. Here’s the run down of all the other results and an updated table with teams who’ve moved up in bold:
Boavista 1 – 2 E.d.Amadora
Benfica 3 – 0 Maritimo
Paços de Ferreira 1 – 0 Aves
Belenenses 1 – 3 Porto
Nacional 0 – 1 U.d.Leiria
