Back To the DRAWing Board…
By: Greg | August 21st, 2007
Well wasn’t that just a bunch of sister-kissing that went on this past weekend? Only three clubs (Sporting, Porto, and Maritimo) took maximum points this week, with five of the eight games resulting in draws. Let’s have a look at the final score lines for the first jornada..
Sporting 4 - 1 Académica
Marítimo 3 - 1 Paços de Ferreira
Nacional 0 - 0 E.d.Amadora
Braga 1 - 2 Porto
Leixões 1 - 1 Benfica
V.Guimarães 1 - 1 V.Setúbal
U.d.Leiria 0 - 0 Boavista
Naval 1 -1 Belenenses
And a few superlatives for the week…
Hero of the Week — Ricardo Quaresma, FC Porto — It’s often tough to say a team like Porto in the Portuguese Liga needs a hero but this week he rose up and converted two sublime free kicks to account for Porto’s offense in the 2-1 win over pesky Braga. If he has a transcendent first half, expect his name to be flying around even more during the winter transfer period than it was this past summer.
Goat of the Week — Fernando Santos, formerly of Benfica — That’s a rough go of it being fired after dropping points to a newly promoted team in the first week, but this wasn’t simply a reaction to that game in particular. The speed with which Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira replaced Santos with Macho Camacho leads me to believe that this move was in the works for some time. Well, as The Who say, “Meet the new boss, same as the old (2002-2004) boss”
Clean Sheets of the Week — Fernando (U.d.Leiria), Carlos (Boavista), Diego Benaglio (Nacional), Nelson (E.d.Amadora)
It’s kind of senseless to put up a table at this point. Sporting, Porto, and Maritimo are top of the table on 3 points while Braga, Paços de Ferreira, and Académica are bottom of the table on zero. Everyone else is in the middle of this ménage à trois sandwich, earning one point for the draws.
See you tomorrow at the Armenia game. I’m on the next flight to Yerevan. Until then…Força Portugal!!!!!!!

It pretty stupid that a top team like Portugal has to travel to Yereven in the middle of the 1st week of the season. UEFA should do like CAF or CONNEMBOL and have a 1st round that eliminates all the former soviet (or likewise) states from the Qualifiying. Then, only the middle teams (like Bulgaria or Romania) would move on to face the big ones in the Group Stage. Just my $.02!

if I had a sister, I’d kiss her everyday…however, God has a sense of humor and has blessed me with a brother who wakes me up at 7 am by shoving his ass cheeks into my nostrils while I’m sleeping…the shit end of the stick smells sweet
