A Look Ahead to Jornada 25

By: Greg | April 13th, 2007

We head into the 25th round of the Liga with the top of the league still wide open and the trap door looking for two lucky contestants to step right up. Benfica have the Monday night tie again due to their UEFA Cup game yesterday. The way they’ve been playing in the last two weeks, they can use all the rest they can get. Their game with Braga is probably the game of the week. I wouldn’t be all too surprised to see a Braga upset here, as they might catch Benfica sleeping, literally. If Benfica drop points, the chance to win the league begins to fall even further away from reality. Here’s a run down of all the games this weekend, along with some fun facts about each team:

Friday, April 13: Maritimo (founded 1910) at Sporting CP (Manager Paulo Bento)

Saturday April 14th: Porto (aka the Dragões) at Academica (Wear all black at home and all white away)

Saturday April 14th: E.d.Amadora (Winners of the Taca de Portugal in 1989/90) at Belenenses (almost relegated last year, now 4th)

Sunday April 15th: Paços de Ferreira (Play at the Estadio da Mata Real) at Naval (Have never finished first in any competition)

Sunday April 15th: Setubal (Birth place of the Special One) at Beira Mar (Winners of the Liga da Honra last year)

Sunday April 15th: U.d.Leiria (Main group of supporters called the Frente Leiria) at Boavista (Won the league in 2000/01)

Sunday April 15th: Aves (Look like candy canes and have a massive ad on the front of their kit) at Nacional (Play in a stadium with a capacity of 3,000)

Monday April 16th: Braga (Mary and Baby Jesus are on their shield) at Benfica (Twice led by England’s favorite manager)

Have a great weekend. I’d tease you like I did last week and then turn up with no posts over the weekend, but let’s see if not teasing leads to some juicy weekend news.

That Mary and Jesus shield is something. Thanks for those quirky tidbits. I like picking up random information about teams. Have a great weekend.

Thanks, Bob. I was thinking of incorporating the format weekly, it seems to work. Appreciate the feedback. Weekend was great by the way, no doubt due to your comment urging me to have said “great weekend” on the Portuguese SuperLiga Blog. ;-)
