Porto Back In 08/09 Champions League, Officially
By: Greg | June 16th, 2008
UEFA have announced that due to a procedural snafu in handling the case, they can not examine the overturning of the appeal before the start of the next edition of the Champions League tournament. If they ultimately decide that any sanctions are necessary, they will be applied to the following season. This leaves hopeful Benfica on the outside looking in, with a UEFA Cup berth, and Vitoria Guimarães still needing to make it out of the final qualifying round to clinch a spot in the group stages.
Porto are found guilty of fixing games a few years back and they’re fined thirty dollars while losing six points in a season where they were ahead by a mile? Wow. How much did THOSE judges cost, Pinto da Costa?

I guess that means Porto hangs on to Quaresma for another year? I was hoping to see what he could do in one of the top 3 leagues next season.

Rules say that any attempt of corruption from a club implies on a direct relegation from the actual league… ATTEMPT… In the case of Porto, it was PROVEN that they payed bribes do the referees…SO… HOW is this possible! Not only they were not relegated, but they only lost 6 SIX POINTS!?!?!?!?!?

If Benfica weren’t so deeply involved and behind the “Apito Dourado” then this would be much more of an issue. It’s a shame for a club of Benfica’s history to try and do in the boardroom and courts what it cannot do on a soccer pitch. If only an “Apito Dourado” was carried out over the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s maybe Benfica would be a little gun shy in trying to stain Portuguese football with this sham of an investigation.
