Sorry I didn’t get to a recap of the league this week. I’ll throw one up sometime next week.

The aforementioned domestic competition is taking the weekend off for Round Seven Bazillion of the Taça de Portugal (the Cup of Portugal). Not to be confused with the Carlsberg (mmmm) Cup or the Cup of Life, this particular tournament is basically tantamount to the Coppa Italia in (you guessed it) Italy and the FA Cup in Inglaterra. Ours is just far uglier.

Most of these matches are rather meh, with the exception of the massively large rematch of last year’s Taça final between Porto and Sporting which will take place Sunday. Even that I can’t get too wrapped up in because this tournament is just WAYYYY too far from the end for me to give more than two shits and perhaps a medium sized doodie. At any rate, the dates are to the left, the clubs are on the right and are split apart by the local kickoff times.

Saturday Nov 8, 2008 Boavista 21 : 30 Guimaraes
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Vizela 15 : 00 Esmoriz
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Valdevez 15 : 00 Gil Vicente
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Olivais e Moscavide 15 : 00 Beira Mar
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Academica 16 : 00 Estrela Amadora
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Leixões 16 : 00 UD Santana
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Arouca 16 : 00 Paços de Ferreira
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Cinfaes 16 : 00 Fatima
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Gondomar 16 : 00 Trofense
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Portimonense 17 : 00 Varzim
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Naval 19 : 30 Belenenses
Sunday Nov 9, 2008 Sporting 20 : 45 Porto
Monday Nov 10, 2008 Nacional 17 : 00 Braga
Monday Nov 10, 2008 Benfica 21 : 30 Desportivo Aves

You can probably do well to only catch the Sporting – Porto tie and get your weekend fill. I’ll be back on Monday with results and a bake sale.

The league welcomed the end of the International Break last week with a round of Portuguese Cup matches that I blatantly ignored as it’s not far enough into the tournament for me to care. It’s really not far enough into the tournament for you to care yet either, although the way the next round shakes out, we have a juicy matchup between Sporting and Porto to look forward to on that front.

In league play, we have few “super juicy” match ups this week, if any. First place Porto (which is borderline redundant at this point) face off against early season surprise Leixões who currently reside in fourth place. Trofense are still seeking out their first point of the season and open the weekend’s affairs with a match against Académica. Here are the rest of the encounters scheduled for this, the sixth round of the 08/09 Portuguese season…

-= Jornada 6 =- All times local. FixtureFacts this weekend focuses on each club’s current scoring leader. Check the parenthesis after each team and there you’ll find the name (or names) of the lucky gentlemen who have netted most copiously for their respective clubs.

Sexta-feira, October 24th @ 20:30 — Trofense (Pinheiro, Lipatin, R. Nascimento, & Miguel Angelo tied with 1) v. Académica (J. Garces, Nuno Piloto, & Cleber Manttuy tied with 1)

Sábado, October 25th @ 18:30 — Belenenses (R. Arroz, R. Porta, & Jose Pedro tied with 1) v. V. Guimarães (Douglas 3)

Sábado, October 25th @ 21:00 — Porto (Hulk 2) v. Leixões (Wesley 4)

Domingo, October 26th @ 16:00 — Marítimo (Marchino 2) v. Rio Ave (Semedo, Mateus, Gaspar, & Chidi tied with 1)

Domingo, October 26th @ 16:00 — Nacional (Nene 3) v. V. Setúbal (Elias, Ricardo Chaves, & Mateus tied with 1)

Domingo, October 26th @ 19:00 — Benfica (Oscar Cardozo 3) v. Naval (Marinho, Paulao, Dudu, Baradji, Bruno Lazaroni, Hauw, & Marcelinho tied with 1)

Domingo, October 26th @ 21:00 — P. Ferreira (William 4) v. Sporting (Helder Postiga 2)

Segunda-feira, October 27th @ 19:45 — Braga (Meyong 2) v. E.d.Amadora (Luis Vidigal 2)

Have a great weekend and stay safe. We’ll see you back next week with some ‘pre’ and ‘re’ caps of this Jornada’s results. Kisses ALL AROUND!!

In the past fifteen seasons, Benfica have won only two league championships and two league cups. After this most recent, disastrous campaign when they finished fourth and “qualified” for the UEFA Cup, Benfica’s powers that be decided that it was time to take a new direction. They decided to be somewhat bold and hired Rui Costa to head up all football-related operations (sort of like a General Manager in American sports).

O Maestro then opened his summer overhaul by bringing Quique Flores, a boss with Champions League pedigree and most recently manager of Spanish Primera side Valencia. With Flores on board and ready to roll, Ol’ Number 10 hit the transfer market hard. With Maniche’s brother, Portuguese international Jorge Ribeiro already signed prior to him coming on board to strengthen the defense, he brought in largely unproven midfielder Hassan Yebda from French side Le Mans on a free.

Then, after losing on-loan Cristian Rodriguez to Porto, Rui hit up Spanish minnows Real Madrid and managed to wrangle winger Javier Balboa from them for four million Euros. While in Spain, he also secured the signature of Portuguese international attacking midfielder Carlos Martins from Recreativo Huelva. Still unsatisfied with his summer spending spree, Rui traveled down to South America and stole away 18-year old striker Jonathan Urretavizcaya from River Plate to inject some youth into the squad.

Today, his transfer tempest probably began to wind down as he secured the services of Argentinian international midfielder Pablo Aimar from Real Zaragoza in a swap which sees 6.5 million Euros and promising young Portuguese winger Fábio Coentrão headed in the other direction. Zaragoza have the option to sign Fábio Coentrão permanently after this season.

So, the money’s been spent. The attack has certainly been fortified. Beloved Rui Costa is at the helm. Quique Flores is going to be stalking the sidelines. Is this, “new” Benfica ready to restore the luster which was reserved for the “old” teams?

While the matches are obviously played on the pitch and not in the transfer market, I’d still say that the moves Benfica have made over the summer do a decent job of showing its massive supporter base that they won’t take fourth place and the UEFA Cup lying down. At least if this is all a big huge fuck up, the Portuguese media will probably initially be very reluctant to heap criticism on a national hero such as Rui Costa. Initially reluctant, that is.

In front of what looked like about three hundred people at the Estadio Nacional in Jamor, Sporting won this year’s Taça de Portugal, defeating Porto 2-0 with a pair of extra time goals from late substitute Rodrigo Tiuí (shown left).

The match itself was dominated offensively by Sporting (catch some highlights below), in spite of the 0-0 score line after 90 minutes. Porto looked tired and disinterested in expending any real energy on the pitch. Recently suspended Porto president Pinto da Costa was featured a number of times on the broadcast and his presence as well as the weight of the Golden Whistle scandal seemed to loom large over the Porto players.

A number of Porto players, including Ricardo Quaresma and Raúl Meireles were playing as though they had already been signed by a larger club and had been told not to play in a manner that would injure them. Whenever Quaresma touched the ball, it was as if his mind was on another planet. If he wanted to increase his prestige and value to a club through his play in this match, he did an extremely poor job of it.

Porto striker Lisandro Lopez appeared to be the only player on the team who was actually concerned with getting the result. The team’s leading scorer had gone down under pressure in the penalty area twice but the referee was not interested and the plays seemed to be borderline at best. They were certainly not penalties that deserved to be called in a tie match where the teams are playing for silverware. This considered, he probably expended more energy arguing the calls than actually trying to make something happen on the pitch. A great deal of his ineffectiveness wasn’t his fault, as the midfield and wingers did nothing to give him any real, consistent service.

Sporting, on the other hand, were willing to take the attack to the apathetic Dragons and came close on a number of occasions. The final scoring touch of Liedson was missed as his replacement Derlei should have had two before the break that were shot too close to the keeper to find the net. Derlei’s strike partner Yannick Djaló used his speed and craftiness to create a few chances but also had trouble finding the killer strike. I’d say that Yannick probably played himself into a definitive starting spot next year and onto a number of clubs’ radars for the coming season.

On the other hand, the players with one foot allegedly already out the door (Miguel Veloso, Quaresma, and João Moutinho) really didn’t feature too well. Veloso went close from a corner kick, but João Moutinho’s main contribution to the game was simply being on the pitch in the 71st minute so Porto defender João Paulo could be shown red for a two footed, spikes up challenge. None of these players did anything substantial in this match to increase their transfer fees for their clubs.

It took the desire, creativity, and energy of sub Rodrigo Tiuí to get Sporting the tallies required to lift the Taça. With his first chance sent sliding by the post, he remained determined to impose himself on the match. In the 110th minute, he got in close and sent a shot off a Porto defender and past a helpless Nuno to give Sporting a deserved 1-0 lead. A little more than six minutes later, he cleaned up a cross into the box with an overhead bike into the back of the net and Sporting fans were sent into ecstasy.

In all, Sporting had the most effective attacking play and deserved the win. Neither team played particularly inspiring football and the best man on the field until Tiuí got out there was probably the referee who did an excellent job of keeping the game rolling evenhandedly (unless you’re Lisandro Lopez and have two penalty shouts go begging). Porto looked a shadow of themselves and appeared ready to pack it in so they can put the tumultuous end to the season behind them. Tiuí cemented his place in Sporting fans’ hearts and the team got to salvage some silverware to show for an otherwise relatively inconsistent and underwhelming (in spite of their 2nd place finish and Champions League qualification) season.

The climax of the season is upon us, as this Sunday’s Taça de Portugal final will be contested between Paulo Bento Box’s second place Sporting and <del>Geraldo Rivera’s</del> Jesualdo Ferreira’s first place Porto in Jamor at the Estadio Nacional.

The match itself represents the last shot at salvaging some sort of silverware this season for Sporting (alliteration much?) while it provides Porto with the opportunity of a League and Cup double. Both teams have major absences of note, as Sporting’s leading scorer Liedson will be sidelined by arthroscopic knee surgery. Meanwhile, Porto will be without their starting keeper Helton who is lost to knee tendinitis, as well as Chelsea’s latest signing, defender Jose Bosingwa.

Porto have been dealing with the shitstorm of bad press resulting from the Final Whistle decisions and now will have the cloud of uncertainty following them from UEFA as they will learn their Champions League fate in the coming weeks. Therefore, Porto may look to really take this game and make it a statement match for them. If they can pump in three or four goals against the second best team in the league, it’s probably a somewhat satisfying end to the season. It would be Porto’s way of saying “Screw you, Portuguese Press and UEFA, keep your Champions League spot, we know we’re the dog’s balls.”

Sporting, on the other hand, will have to manage without their leading goal scorer and offensive spark plug Liedson. As if slaying the Porto dragon weren’t hard enough, they’re going to have to do it without their most potent offensive weapon. However, Yannick Djalo (just pronounce his last name “JELL-O” it’s more fun) has been scoring more often than I did in college (that’s right, I used to get plenty) as of late and is an option for Boss Bento to fill the void left by the player Sportinguistas affectionately call “Levezinho” (loosely translated into English as “The light one”).

Enough mouth diarrhea, here’s who I guess will be taking the field for Porto at kickoff:

Porto – 69 pts, Finish: <del>Jussi Jääskeläinen</del> 1st Place – Manager Jesualdo Ferreira
Quaresma – Lisandro Lopez – Tarik Sektioui
Lucho – Paulo Assunção – Raul Meireles
Lino – Pedro Emanuel – Bruno Alves – Jorge Fucile
Nuno

The green and white hooped Lions will probably look something like this …

Sporting – 55 pts, Finish: 2nd Place – Manager Paulo Bento
Izmailov – Yannick – Simon
Romagnoli – João Moutinho
Miguel Veloso
Abel – Tonel – Polga – Grimi
Rui Patricio

Obviously, the rigid nature of text makes it difficult to precisely illustrate EXACTLY where the guys will line up, but I’m sure you get the drift. While Izmailov and Simon will be expected to track back, they’re primarily in the side as attacking mids. I hope (if Bento goes with the above) that Yannick can thrive up front alone, as he isn’t particularly big and isn’t known for being able to hold the ball up à la Didier Drogba.

If the average fan is asking why they should even bother with watching this match, consider the fact that there’s about four or five serious prospects that have been linked with huge moves abroad playing in these teams’ starting XI. I’m sure the stands will be filled with scouts deciding where to throw their club’s millions in the coming summer.

I’ll go out on a limb and predict an awesome match, with Sporting taking home the Taça after a 4 – 3 thriller. Have a great weekend and enjoy the match as well as some alcoholic beverages. Beverages make everything, including football, that much better.

1. Porto	69 *League Champions / UEFA Champions League berth*
2. Sporting	55 *UEFA Champions League berth*
3. V. Guimarães	53	*UEFA Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round berth*
6. V. Setúbal	45	*UEFA Cup berth* (Spot from Taça de Portugal, given Sporting and Porto’s final positions)
7. Braga	41	*Intertoto Cup*
8. Belenenses	40
9. Boavista	36	*Relegated due to Golden Whistle punishment, currently in appeal*
13. E.d.Amadora	31
14. Leixões	26
15. P. Ferreira	25	*Relegated, finality pending Boavista’s appeal of its relegation*
16. U.d.Leiria	16	*Relegated*

Hero of the Week – Evandro, Rio Ave – With his team staring plainly at another year in the Liga Vitalis, he tallied the match tying goal against Feirense in the 86th minute. Being that Rio Ave have had enormous amounts of problems paying their players this year as well, they are appropriately going to be replacing dead beats Boavista in the top flight. Since Rio Ave play in front of what amounts to the local butcher, baker, and candlestick maker, I unfortunately do not have YouTubage or any other video whatsoever of this for you. I am sorry.

Goats of the Week – Paços de Ferreira - They had the ideal situation brewing for them. They were playing the dead last team at home. The other potentially relegation bound team, Leixões, lost 1-0 away to Marítimo. Paços de Ferreira had a lead going into the 90th minute against a team that was playing for pride. However, they couldn’t keep out a cross converted by Patrick in the dying stages of the game to salvage a point for Leiria. Paços de Ferreira can probably take solace in the fact that Boavista’s appeal against their relegation probably has very little chance of working out. Therefore, with Leiria already relegated and Boavista going down as punishment from the Golden Whistle trials, Paços de Ferreira will probably be saved from the relegation axe. They’ll stay up not on the merit of their play but on the backs of cheaters.

Clean Sheets of the Week – Ace Ventura (Porto), Marcos (Marítimo), Nilson and Nuno Santos for six minutes (V.Guimarães), and Quim (Benfica).

It was a fun season, even though Porto locked it up after the first month or so. We still have the Taça de Portugal final between Sporting and Porto this coming Sunday (May 18th). That considered, we can now turn our attention towards the transfers (which have already begun with Jose Bosingwa in London to discuss terms of a 20 million Euro transfer to my Chels, yay) and the Portuguese National team’s bid to win its first major international championship at the 2008 Euro. I hope you had a great weekend and will see you back here tomorrow, as always, same Chop time, same Chop Channel.

I’m something of an amateur prognosticator / absolute genius, therefore I’m going to take a look into the future with the final three weeks of the Portuguese Liga season. I’ve been saying for the past two or three weeks (no, really, this blog has been here for even longer than that) that the top of the table in the Tuga Liga (taking out three time champion Porto) is actually shaping up for quite the exciting run in.

These exciting, close finish things never pan out, of course, but we can all dream for the time being…

If this is your first time to my lovely little cubby hole on this, the THIRTY FIFTH MOST POWERFUL BLOG OF THEM ALL, let me remind you what the top of the league looks like, with three matches to go until the end of days:

2nd — V.Guimarães –	49 **UEFA Champions League**
3rd — Sporting – 46 **UEFA Champions League, Qualifying**
4th — Benfica – 45 **UEFA Cup**
5th — Belenenses –	42 **UEFA Cup**
6th — V.Setúbal –	41 **Intertoto Cup**
7th — Marítimo –	40

I have devised a superb, all encompassing mathematical formula to determine how I think each team will end up. Actually, I just look at each of the three individual matches and decide if I think the team is going to win or lose…

2nd Place V.Guimarães
v. Porto – L
@ Belenenses – D
v. E.d.Amadora – W
Final 3 matches: 1-1-1 (4 points) Final Points: 53

3rd Place Sporting
v. Maritimo – D
@ P.Ferreira – W
v. Boavista – W
Final 3 matches: 2-0-1 (7 points) Final Points: 53

4th Place Benfica
v. Belenenses – D
@ E.d.Amadora – W
v. V.Setúbal – W
Final 3 matches: 2-0-1 (7 points) Final Points: 52

5th Place Belenenses
@ Benfica – D
v. V.Guimarães – D
@ Nacional – W
Final 3 matches: 1-0-2 (5 points) Final Points: 47

6th Place V.Setúbal
v. E.d.Amadora – D
v. Leixoes – W
@ Benfica – L
Final 3 matches: 1-1-1 (4 points) Final Points: 45

7th Place Maritimo
@ Sporting – D
v. U.d.Leiria – W
@ Leixoes – W
Final 3 matches: 2-0-1 (7 points) Final Points: 47

Ahh shit. I should have realized I was setting myself up for more work with having to go back and look at tie breakers. The Portuguese League follows the same tie breaker scenario as the Spanish Liga, where they go by head to head record firstly rather than goal differential. I personally prefer this method to the goal differential method. Therefore, considering tie breakers, this is how the league would end if my predictions hold water:

2nd — Sporting –53 (3-2 agg over V.Guimarães) **UEFA Champions League**
3rd — V.Guimarães – 53 **UEFA Champions League, Qualifying**
4th — Benfica – 52 **UEFA Cup**
5th — Marítimo–	47 (5-1 agg over Belenenses) **UEFA Cup**
6th — Belenenses — 47 **UEFA Cup**
7th — V.Setúbal –	45 **Intertoto Cup, from Belenenses accepting UEFA Cup Bid**

To quickly explain how Belenenses gains a UEFA Cup bid in this scenario… Sporting play Porto in the upcoming Taça de Portugal finals. The winner of the Taça gains an automatic bid into the UEFA Cup. However, since both Sporting and Porto have already qualified for the far more prestigious Champions League, the UEFA Cup bid will go to the sixth place team and the Intertoto Cup bid down to the seventh place. In this case, those teams are Belenenses and V.Setúbal, respectively.

Thrilling? You bet. Chances my predictions will come true? None. Got to here and read the whole thing? Thanks, I feel loved. Tomorrow, all things held equal, we’ll work out the bottom feeders with the same exciting predictive formulas. Until then, forget the curve ball reader, give ‘em the heater.

Don’t be confused by the Chelsea badge, it’s there for my boys in blue who are going to take it to Fernanda Torres and Co. today. The race at the top (save Porto) is getting even tighter and more interesting with the following results taking place this past jornada:

Académica	0 – 0	V.Guimarães
Marítimo 4 – 1 Braga
Leixões 0 – 0 E.d.Amadora
P. Ferreira 2 – 2 Naval
Boavista 1 – 0 Nacional
Leiria 4 – 1 Sporting
Porto 2 – 0 Benfica
Belenenses 5 – 0 V.Setúbal

Hero of the Week — Diakite, Boavista – The players and supporters were teased into thinking some charlatan was going to give them almost forty million Euros to save all. Boavista’s “savior” is now in jail and the players are still owed money. The club produced about a month’s worth of wages for the players this past weekend and assured them more was coming. Some players were even in such dire circumstances that they had to be paid cash. In the case of Diakite, if you can take the field without getting paid for the past two months and then some, and score the game winner, you’re a hero in my book. Or maybe an idiot for playing without being paid… Better hurry on before I change my mind…

Goat(s) of the Week — Sporting CP – Setubal got thumped 5-0 at Belenenses, but Sporting outdid them with a 4-1 loss to the worst team in the league. With Benfica almost sure to lose at Porto, this game was a no-brainer three-point sitter to put some distance between Benfica and the Leões. Or maybe not. They played abysmally and were on the back foot all match. Leiria looked like Porto and Sporting looked like a second division team… In the MLS. Manager Paulo Bento’s ass must be heating up even more now, as the proverbial hot seat gets warmer and warmer.

Clean Sheets of the Week — Pedro Roma (Academica), Nilson (V.Guimaraes), Jorge Baptista (Leixões), Nelson (E.d.Amadora), Peter Jehle (Boavista), Helton (Porto), Julio Cesar (Belenenses).

With three matches remaining, the top of the table now looks a little something like this:

2nd — V.Guimarães –	49 **UEFA Champions League**
3rd — Sporting – 46 **UEFA Champions League, Qualifying**
4th — Benfica – 45 **UEFA Cup**
5th — Belenenses –	42 **UEFA Cup**
6th — V.Setúbal –	41 **Intertoto Cup**
7th — Marítimo –	40

There are a mere nine points separating Champions League and squadoosh. With Sporting and Porto playing in the Cup of Portugal final, unless Sporting finish in sixth, one of the teams who finish just out of UEFA Cup qualification will be gifted a spot in the tournament by default. This extra spot would normally go to the winner of the Cup of Portugal, but I don’t think Porto are going to swap their Champions League spot for the UEFA Cup spot in the event that they win the Taça. We’ll look at each of these team’s last three matches tomorrow to see who stands the best chance at Europe by the time the dust settles.

Then Thursday will probably be a peek at the relegation situation which could all be for naught as Leiria have already booked themselves a ticket to the Liga Vitalis and Boavista may be relegated due to Golden Whistle repercussions, thus satisfying the two clubs going down. Until then… Keep it Chop. And COME ON CHELSEA!!!!!!!!!!! BEAT THE SCOUSERS!!!!!!

Simply put, I haven’t watched / been a part of a match that was this exciting or entertaining for at least a year…

Taça de Portugal Semifinal — Sporting 5 – 3 Benfica — I watched this game at a Portuguese bar that was probably 75% Sportinguista. Suffice it to say the first sixty five minutes were not our best game. Benfica came out firing on all cylinders and were a class above Sporting. The Lions looked like a team that was playing their third game in a week (they were) and were out of sorts. Rui Costa opened the scoring for Benfica with a great run on to a ball which he poked through Sporting keeper Rui Patricio’s legs from about six yards out. Nuno Gomes (no, seriously, he scored) parked the second from a few feet out on a cross. At this point it was about a half an hour gone and there was one Benfiquista woman shouting and talking so much shit that we were all starting to get pretty annoyed. Big mistake on her part.

The second half started and Bento had already taken off Adrien Silva for Izmailov in the midfield in the first half when he began tinkering some more. He subbed in the largely ineffective Romagnoli for Derlei to try to add some presence forward and it worked. In the sixty-seventh minute the flood gates opened as Sporting pounded the Benfica defense with cross after cross, and attack after attack. Finally this paid off with a strike from Yannick Djalo to half the visiting Eagles’ lead to 2 – 1. The pressure continued and Liedson converted a grounder past Quim from about fifteen yards out in the seventy sixth minute to tie the game. At this point the aforementioned Benfiquista woman had now shut her mouth and had a million screaming drunks dancing and returning the shit talking. To make matters worse for Benfica (who looked like a pub or recreational team at this point when defending) Derlei opened his account on the seventy ninth minute from five yards out on a grounded cross to make it 3 – 2. You can imagine the pandemonium in the bar at this point.

However, all was not lost for Benfica, as on a rare second half move forward, they managed to get the ball to Cristian Rodriguez who parked an absolute screamer from about twenty yards out to tie the game at 3 – 3. Cue the Benfiquista woman to start her bullshit again.

Nonetheless, she was quickly silenced by Yannick Djalo who scored his second on a deflected shot from about twenty two yards out to make it 4 – 3 on the eighty seventh minute. Then, to top it all off, Simon Vukcevic volleyed a cross past Quim in stoppage time to make it 5 – 3.

I can’t write a blog that would even come close to describing the emotion and the events associated with this match. The quick goal highlights below don’t do the match justice either. The second YouTubage is a cute take on the match, with music, from a clearly Sportingista viewpoint. This is one of those games where, if you weren’t there, you just don’t know. My voice is still absent from my throat. Jornada 27 preview comes tomorrow. See you then.

Ever since my return, I’ve largely ignored the Taça de Portugal. I even mistook it for a competition where you don’t actually gain a spot in Europe by winning. However, as I was corrected on yesterday’s recap, the Carlsberg Cup (formerly known as the League Cup) is simply a drinking vessel and the Taça de Portugal (which basically means “Cup of Portugal”) is the tournament that includes every team from your kid’s local recreational club up to Pinto da Cheater’s Porto. Winning the Taça de Portugal also means an automatic UEFA Cup berth (what I originally thought was the prize associated with the Danish Beer Company Cup). To recap: I’m dumb, the Carlsberg Cup is pretty and shiny and gains you nothing in Europe, and winning the Taça de Portugal earns a UEFA Cup spot.

Interestingly enough, the four (now three, sorry Setubal) teams involved in the semi finals of this year’s Taça de Portugal are all in European spots already, given their position in the standings. Porto are obviously qualified for the Champions League, Sporting are currently in the Champions League Qualification Round, and Benfica and Setubal are in the remaining UEFA Cup spots. So, given the teams’ position in the standings, they may actually have my original brain fart come true and have the Taça de Portugal be worth nothing to the winner.

Incidentally, the club that stands to benefit the most from this situation is 6th place Belenenses who currently would qualify for the Intertoto Cup. Should the teams above them finish as they are, the UEFA Cup spot associated with victory in the Taça de Portugal would fall all the way down to the Blues from Restelo.

Now that we’ve determined that the remaining teams involved in this tournament, given their present league position, would view a UEFA Cup spot as either a step down or a “so what,” let’s get excited for the matches and enjoy a half-assed recap of yesterday’s Porto – Setubal match and a lovely, to the point preview of today’s Sporting – Benfica tie, shall we?

Porto 3 – 0 Setubal – Porto looked like they were in a different class for almost the entire match. When an own goal from Jorginho on a first half corner went in to kick off the scoring, Porto simply toyed with their fifth place opponents. Lucho Gonzalez netted two more to seal the deal for the Dragões and earn them a place in the finals.

Porto have played fantastic domestic football for the most part this year and the only way I can see them being knocked off next year is if they sell more of their young first team talent than their Big Three counterparts. Then maybe if they have an almost completely different starting XI, other teams might have a shot.

Sporting v. Benfica, 20:30 local — The “other” two from the Big Three are underachieving, both from Lisbon, and are looking at their last chance for silverware this year with this competition. Benfica are coming off a historic 3-0 loss at home and a UEFA Cup spot might be slipping from their grasp. This match should be fun, to say the least.

On a side note in regards to this match, my in laws are in town. My mother in law supports Sporting and my father-in-law loves Benfica. I was invited to dinner tonight with them and my wife. I can’t wait.
