U(nderachieving)-21 Team
By: Greg | June 14th, 2007
Nani. João Moutinho. Yannick Djaló. Miguel Veloso. Hugo Almeida. Manuel Fernandes. They could all start for an All-World U-21 team. But they apparently can’t play too well together.
This team has been tapped as favorites numerous times in competition. Every time… they come up short. The excuses are running out and so is the time in the hourglass for manager Jose Couceiro.
Couceiro puts on a nice show of disgust and anger and craziness on the sidelines to try to make the outward impression that he’s energetically giving all he can to make this team work. If he IS in fact doing all he can, his all is not enough. The team is not responding to him. They’re playing sloppily and uninspired. This should not be the result of putting such talented players on the pitch together.
Now Portugal must defeat Israel by at least two goals and hope a Dutch team which will be resting the majority of its squad can beat Belgium. Otherwise, it’s off to the resort. A loss may do the team well in the long run as it ought to be the final nail in Couceiro’s coaching coffin. I’m so disappointed in this team that I can’t even crack a stupid, pun-filled sarcastic joke here. I’ll save that for my second post of the day.
