The Wasteland That is League News

By: Greg | Comments 1 Comment

Wow. What an absolute “poo” day for League news coming out of Portugal. As is to be expected, the Euro is dominating the headlines with precious few prominent stories in regards to league activity. Therefore, here’s a quick news piece from each of the “Big Three” clubs:
** Porto ** - For their [...]

Who’s Going to the 2008 Euro?

By: Greg | Comments No Comments

Now that the final teams have been set, we can make a list of the fourteen players from the Portuguese Liga who will be representing their countries in SwissAustria this summer. I’ll give you one guess as to what country the majority of players who have been selected from the PORTUGUESE Liga are from. [...]

Argentina: Porto’s Own Personal Portuguese Liga

By: Greg | Comments 1 Comment

It’s been discussed ad nauseam that Portugal is, in many respects, a feeder league for much larger clubs from countries such as Spain, Italy, and England. On the other hand, in order to remain competitive both domestically and on the European stage, who can Portuguese teams consider their feeder league? Essentially, who is [...]

The Mourinho Situation

By: Greg | Comments 6 Comments

With such a dearth of decent domestic league news in Portugal today, I decided I might as well throw my two cents in on the current situation surrounding Portuguese International Man of Mystery, Jose Mourinho.
First off let me state that I’m a Chelsea fan and I absolutely fucking adore the guy. I [...]

Summer Transfer Targets, Benfica Trio Edition

By: Greg | Comments 2 Comments

I have already highlighted a handful of a few Portuguese league guys who I think are probably on their way out (one already went; Bosingwa to Chelsea) this summer. While those were the most probable, biggest and most reasonable names, that doesn’t mean that there still isn’t further talent in the league to [...]

Quique Sánchez Flores Has A Job Until October

By: Greg | Comments 5 Comments

Which is the month in which Benfica will probably start their coaching carousel of hiring former bosses who took the team virtually nowhere.
I sincerely hope that Rui Costa takes his job and his pride seriously and gets this team headed in the right direction.  This first hire seems to be doing just that.
Quique Flores is [...]

One for Two Ain’t Bad and Shameless Self/Cross Promotion

By: Greg | Comments No Comments

I’m sorry. I trolled the nets for any real relevant news in between swigs of Gatorade and handfuls of Advil, but the Portuguese press everywhere want to remind me of the fact that my team lost yesterday. So, I’m taking the day off from the Offside blog and directing you to the Euro [...]

It’s Champions League Final Wednesday, Hooray!

By: Greg | Comments 1 Comment

This basically means that all other relevant football news is put on hold for the next twenty four hours, as well as any relevant though process in my brain.
I’ve mentioned a bazillion times here and on the National Team blog that I took today and the rest of the week off to have [...]

Tuesday Trainer Tidbits

By: Greg | Comments 4 Comments

I’m sorry about the headline, really I am. I’m just so into alliteration lately that I can’t contain causing conflagrations and cacophonies of concurrent consonant… [shit, quick, someone give me a hard 'c' word for sound!].
The news day is a bit slow on the league front, with the Champions League final to [...]

Taça de Portugal Final: Sporting 2 - 0 Porto

By: Greg | Comments 3 Comments

In front of what looked like about three hundred people at the Estadio Nacional in Jamor, Sporting won this year’s Taça de Portugal, defeating Porto 2-0 with a pair of extra time goals from late substitute Rodrigo Tiuí (shown left).
The match itself was dominated offensively by Sporting (catch some highlights below), in spite [...]
